The Solar Cooker Project of Jewish World Watch is designed to help women and girls who have fled the genocide in Darfur, Sudan who are vulnerable to beatings and rape while collecting firewood for cooking. As nearby supplies of firewood become depleted, the women must venture further away from the refugee camp making them more vulnerable to attack. The solar cookers enable the women to remain in the relative safety of their refugee camp with a clean, alternative way to cook their food. The JWW Solar Cooker Project also provides income opportunities for the women through the manufacturing of solar cookers and the training of others to use them.
